Mu Ramen

The day before Thanksgiving, my school had a half day so my dad and I decided to go to the city to get ramen from a place in Queens called Mu Ramen.  At Mu Ramen they have a special ramen named Mu Ramen, after the restaurant.  This ramen is Jewish deli based, so it has corned beef, pickles, menma, and cabbage. The broth is special because they boil oxtail and bone marrow down for two days to give it that nice flavor.

Before we went to Mu Ramen we went to the winter market in Bryant Park.  Usually at a winter market, stores set up little stations with food, gadgets, and jewelry.  My dad and I walked around and found Max Brenner’s stand set up, so of course we had to get their delicious Italian hot chocolate.  When we got it, I took a nice long sip because I was so thirsty. I have to give it to them they make the best hot chocolate.  It is so rich and creamy that it is almost not explainable.   As we were drinking our hot chocolates we came upon a mac & cheese stand.  I know mac & cheese is a common american food but this mac & cheese was different.  It was different because they had this topping that you could put on it that consisted of panko bread crumbs, bacon, and onions.  My dad and I got a large to share and we opted to put the topping on it.  I’m glad we decided to put the topping on it.  The topping made the mac & cheese crunchy, with a little spicy kick and a nice flavor.  After it was all gone I wish they would’ve had the size XXL.

Then we headed over to Mu Ramen.  When we got there we were early, so we waited a little until it was time to go in ( it opens at 5:30 ).  My dad and I decided to sit at the bar to watch them cook.  We decided to split an appetizer and get two ramens to share. The final decision was to get the black edamame and that my dad was getting the Mu Ramen and I was getting their special Thanksgiving ramen.  So, let's talk about the edamame.  The edamame is black because they char the edamame until it is black and charred on the outside.  Then they squeeze yuzu juice onto the edamame and then season it with yuzu salt.  A yuzu is sort of like a lemon, but with a little more citrus flavor.  Trust me it is so much better than regular edamame.  It is a little spicy and a little sour from the yuzu juice, and has a nice char taste.  It was the best edamame ever.

Now, let's talk about the actual ramen.  Just like what I said before, my dad got the Mu ramen, and I got the Thanksgiving ramen.  I have to admit I was a little hesitant on getting the Thanksgiving ramen, but when I did get my food I was very glad that I had gotten it.  It had a savory taste, and I thought it was a nice thin soup even though other people thought it was creamy.  The noodles were nice and thin amd that is personally what I like in noodles.  To be honest I didn’t really taste the brussel sprouts in the soup but I liked the turkey confit.  Now for my dad’s ramen.  I thought the broth was cloudy, but it had a meatier taste, because they boiled down the oxtail, and the bone marrow.  The corn beef was, so good it was nice, and fatty it was the bomb.  Let’s talk about the pickle I know what you are thinking.  “A pickle in a soup!”  Well it was actually very good it was warm, and still sour like a regular pickle.  I thought it was very good overall, and really enjoyed our soups there, and will be glad to go again.

Escaping the cold at Roc-N-Ramen

After being to the other side of the world, I’m really into ramen now so my dad took me to a place called Roc-N-Ramen in New Rochelle.  When you walk into a Japanese restaurant you usually see a lot of cultural stuff.  Not in this restaurant. In this restaurant, it was just like an empty room, but with a lot of people in it.  Man, that place is busy!  There were a few tables, but my dad I wanted to sit at the bar.  A few minutes later, the waiter came by to take our order.  I ordered a Shoyu ramen and my dad got a Tonkotsu ramen, which has a pork bone broth.  Here's the deal for the pork broth one. They take pork bones put them in broth and cook it all night.  About 5 minutes later, our food came.  The pork in it was char-grilled and they cooked the egg so it was nice and runny.  It was the best ramen I’ve ever had.  When you bit into the pork it wasn’t as fatty as it would be in different places, and when you put the egg in your mouth it just melts.  The noodles in the soup are thinner than spaghetti, but they stick together and they are heavy.  The noodles here were really good , but it had the same traits as the rest of the normal ramen noodles.  When I finished the soup a few minutes later I wanted more of that soup because it was so good.  So I totally recommend you go there. It is so good and it’s a great place to go to warm you up in the winter.

24 hours in Tokyo

Sushi in Tokyo!
This year for the holidays, we decided to go to Vietnam to visit our cousin Rena.  There is no direct way to get to Vietnam, so we stopped in Tokyo for an exciting 24 hours.  When we got there, we checked in to go on a bus to take us to the hotel and then we went to explore the airport.  There will all kinds of stores and the stores were so different than what we have at home. We got back just in time for the bus. Outside, the air in Tokyo smelled like birthday cake just after being blown out. On the bus we all took naps because we had a long plane ride and it was dark.  When we arrived at the hotel it was already 8:00pm and we were all tired and hungry.  We went to our room and dropped our stuff off and went to dinner.  We went down stairs to a buffet and waited in line but when they got to us they said we couldn’t go in.  Which wasn’t cool.  So we went to a barbecue restaurant instead.

We were excited because it meant we got to try Kobe beef.  Kobe beef is a special type of beef that comes from Japan.  The cows get fed with better grains so it tastes so much better. The next morning we took a tour of Tokyo. First we went to the Tokyo Tower. Then we went to the Emperor's palace and then we went to a Buddhist Temple.  Then we went back to the airport. checked in, and went through security but we still had time to eat.  So we went to have sushi. Like seriously if you come to Japan you have to have sushi.  So we went in to the restaurant and went to an open table then the waitress came to our table.  I got an assorted sushi platter.  It had a tuna roll and some things that you’d get in the U.S.A.  One difference is that the sushi in Tokyo tasted much fresher than sushi in the U.S.A. Also sometimes sushi here can be soggier and chewier than sushi in Tokyo.  I also tried some of my dad’s sushi which had fish that you can only get in Japan.  Some of it was interesting and some of the weirder pieces I didn’t like.

Two weeks later we were back in Tokyo on our way home.  If you go to Tokyo, you can get sushi but you also have to get ramen.  Ramen is a japanese noodle soup. It usually has a soy sauce base broth, a miso base broth, or a broth made from pork bones.  Ramen is called ramen because of the noodles that are in it which are called ramen noodles.  In the soup there is ramen noodles scallions, assorted meats, and bamboo.  In Japan, It usually comes with potstickers and rice.  I have had lots of ramen at home but the ramen in Japan was the best I’ve had so far. The broth really stood out. I’ve always wanted to go to Tokyo and now that I can say I’ve had sushi there and lived to tell the tale. My next few posts will be about our trip to Vietnam. Come back to read about it!

Mall Sushi?!?! Lunch at East in the Palisades Mall

My family and I were at the Palisades Mall and everyone wanted different things for lunch. We decided to go to East for a unique sushi meal. It's unique because it has a conveyor belt with sushi on it that goes around and around and around. When you sit down at your table, you can eat right away by taking things off the conveyor belt (but you can still order off of the menu). The plates are different colors and the price of each plate goes by the color. You can eat only one sushi roll and it might be six dollars. Now let's get to the food part: When we got there we each took different plates. I had a California roll, a shrimp roll, and a piece of octopus. The octopus was chewy but still good. This place was really fun to go to. Maybe you can go to East and you can see how much fun it is too!

On Saturday, January 18th, my family thought it would be a good idea to drive up to Peekskill for some ramen at RameNesque. Ramen is a big bowl of soup. It has noodles, meat, scallions, corn, fish cake, and a soy sauce egg. Before we got our ramen, we ordered veggie dumplings and beef sushi. I didn't even think beef sushi was a real thing. It tasted like crunchy, soft beef with avocado and cucumber. My little brother doesn't like sushi but he loved trying the beef sushi. When we got our ramen, I was really hungry. The flavors in the ramen were intense. The broth was nice and salty, the chicken was tender, and it just went well together. The noodles were squiggly and grainy. I was surprised that one big bowl of soup can fill me up. I asked the waiter if the noodles were homemade. She said everything was handmade except the noodles because it is hard to make. She said the noodle machine was too expensive. RameNesque is a good restaurant that you should definitely check out.

Bibimbap at Neo World Bistro

On Saturday, my family joined two other families to go to NEO World Bistro for dinner, the Mohrs and the Justianos. We go to NEO for my birthday and other occasions. One day my dad said instead of getting sushi, try the Bibimbap. I used to just have some of his Bibimbap. Bibimbap comes in a big stone bowl, which has been heated in an oven to get super hot. It has cabbage, carrots, eggs, rice, and seaweed. You can pick different meats like shrimp, beef, rib eye, and chicken. I get beef. There are two different sauces. One is a sweet and flavorful sauce. The other is a spicy sauce. I like to put both sauces in my bowl. My friends ordered sushi, but when they saw I was eating Bibimbap, they wanted it too! Now they are thinking about getting it next time. My four-year old brother eats his own whole bowl of Bibimbap.

Eating a piece of Octopus sushi at Tengda
I go Tengda Asian Bistro with my friend Alexia. When we go, we play Hangman. We usually both get sushi. It's ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI so we can eat as much as want! And the best part is I love sushi! It fits perfectly like a puzzle. I usually get a California Roll, a Yellowtail-Scallion roll, and a Tuna Roll. Or I get the same thing but instead of a Tuna roll I get the Shrimp Tempura roll. And sometimes if I'm feeling good enough I get a piece of Octopus Sushi. I like the Octopus because it is very chewy and flavorful and it has a lot of texture to it. You know what sounds even better than that? Making your own sushi! My family does it in the summertime and in the springtime and maybe sometimes in the fall. We get our ingredient from H-Mart. They are the best Korean market I know of! Lots of times, we make California Rolls. Mmmmm, my favorite! Occasionally we make tuna and salmon rolls. My other favorites! Sushi is definitely one of my favorite foods. It is very filling and I love the flavors.
